Growing Things

Our class have been having lots of fun carrying out Science experiments! We learned that plants need 3 things to grow - water, heat and soil

We carried out an experiment using green food colouring, water and a stick of celery. We noticed that when the celery was put into the food colouring, the little tubes inside the celery started to change colour and they turned darker green! We learned that the water travels up the plant to feed all parts of it!

We carried out this experiment again, this time using red food colouring and it was much more clear to see! The celery plant and leaves at the top of the plant started to turn red - the water had travelled all the way to the top to help it to grow!

Santa's Little Helper

We Múinteoir Ailish's Junior Infants had a very special visitor in their classroom before the holidays - Santa's Little Helper! She read them a special Christmas story all about the importance of spending time with family and friends over the festive season!

Wellness & Wellbeing

We have been working on our wellbeing and improving our overall wellness by taking part in weekly Yoga sessions with a talented yoga instructor, Michelle.

We have been practising various yoga positions and am improving our breathing, mobility and relaxation strategies...

Science Week 2015

For Science Week 2015, we had a very important visitor to our school - Dr. Naomi, a real-life scientist!

We did lots of experiments with sound - putting different objects into balloons, to see how sounds of different volumes could be made.

We learned that by making things shake, big, loud sounds could be made.

We then did another experiment, pinching and pulling a wet string that was attached to different cups. We not only made big sounds, but proved that we could feel sounds too!

We then used other objects made of different materials and sizes like tin and plastic, to see what kind of sound it makes, doing the same experiment.

We learned that by using a metal spring and a plastic and cardboard bucket, we could make a big sound like a cannon!

We learned loads of scientific facts for Science Week - we learned that we can feel sound sometimes and to hear sound, something needs to shake. We tested lots of sounds too.

Guess How Much I Love You

This week we went on an exciting trip to the Black Box Theatre to watch a spectacular production of one of our favourite story books. We traveled on a bus to the city and sang songs along the way...

We then watched the puppet show, Guess How Much I Love You. We watched as Little Nutbrown Hare tries to tell Big Nutbrown Hare how much he loves him. We enjoyed watching the puppets acting out the story, along with the music and lighting too! We loved our trip to the theatre!

Maths Week 2015

This week we have been celebrating national Maths Week in our class by taking part in lots of fun maths games and activities. On Monday, we did a Maths Trail around our school and classroom. We had to investigate and record answers to questions, such as 'How many legs are on one of the chairs in the classroom?', 'What colours are on the notice board outside the classroom?' and 'Find a shape in the classroom and draw it.' Look at the children counting the legs on the chair and observing and recording the colours on the notice board outside our classroom...

And here the children have found lots of shapes around the classroom in everyday objects, such as a circular clock, an oval shaped balloon, a rectangular sign and a square letter tile...

On Wednesday some of the mums and dad came to our classroom to play Maths for Fun games with the children. The boys and girls love to use their maths skills in a fun way!
